Hunger Games Girl on Fire – Official iOS Game Review

With all the excitement of midnight shows beginning tonight, you might have forgotten about The Hunger Games Girl on Fire official tie-in game for iOS. It was just released today and if you have an iPhone or an iPad, you can download the game here for free!I spent some time playing with it, and I have to say, it’s pretty good! The designer said he game it an old-school 16 bit feel, reminiscent of an older Nintendo system, intentionally in order to make it more it’s own thing and less a cheesy mirror of Jennifer Lawrence and the film. It’s got a great look, polished, but retro. The music is one of the best parts as the dramatic drum beats greet you, along with a quick (skipable) intro that warns you the woods are dangerous, but hey, gotta hunt somewhere! The game opens with Katniss running through the forest. A swipe up lands you in the tree tops and a swipe down rolls you back to the ground, all the while running. Why are you running? Tracker Jackers of course! Giant hornets are after you. Tap them to shoot them out of the sky with your trusty bow and you’re safe for a little longer.Soon they start shooting poison/laser/whatever at you, making things more difficult. If you get hit by a Tracker Jacker or it’s projectile, you start “hallucinating.” Get hit again while still in the venom induced state, and it’s lights out. The level proceeds to get more difficult as these muttations get added shields, making it impossible to shoot them while active. The goal is to get safely back to District 12, where it is rumored that instead of Tracker Jackers, you will have Capitol hovercraft to deal with, but apparently I’m not skilled enough to get that far yet.Overall, it’s a solid game for you phone, with some intense action that requires leaping, rolling, and shooting, all at once. Great music and fun graphics seal the deal. I would have liked to see perhaps some kind of powerups or additional aspects, but as it is, still lots of fun. 8/10.
